What is Hypnosis?

Hypnotherapy is a gentle yet effective method that uses focused relaxation to help you access the subconscious mind—where habits, emotions, and beliefs are deeply rooted. Unlike what you may have seen in films or stage shows, therapeutic hypnosis is not about control or mind tricks. Instead, it's a collaborative, respectful process that supports positive change by helping you understand and shift the inner patterns that may be holding you back. At Novarolis, sessions are always tailored to your goals and comfort level.

What is the difference between hypnosis and hypnosis therepy?

Hypnosis is a state of focused attention and heightened suggestibility, often accompanied by deep relaxation. It can be used for entertainment or simple relaxation, helping individuals reach a meditative-like state.

Hypnosis therapy, on the other hand, is a structured and professional practice where hypnosis is employed as a therapeutic tool to address specific issues like stress, anxiety, phobias, or breaking habits. It is guided by a trained practitioner and involves tailored strategies to promote healing or personal growth.

While hypnosis is the process itself, hypnosis therapy is the intentional application of that process to achieve therapeutic goals.

What is the difference between hypnotherapy and hypnosis therapy?

There is no difference, we just use both to describe what we do.

What is a hypnotic state?

Being in a hypnotic state really just means that we are in a relaxed state – somewhere between awake and asleep. Also sometimes called focused attention or being in a trance. In the hypnotic state, we are both physically and mentally relaxed. The state can be slightly relaxed or deeply relaxed – and the deeper we get down, the more access we give to the subconscious. In the hypnosis state, there is access to the subconscious, which means that new programs can be installed.

The hypnotic relaxed state is a completely common state in our lives – a state that we are in several times a day. At least just before we wake up and just before we fall asleep. But we can also be in a hypnotic state when we daydream, read a book, watch TV, go for a walk in the woods or get a massage.

The hypnotic state, also called trance, can be more or less deep. During the hypnosis session, most will experience that they are aware of everything that is said, and a few will experience being 'completely gone'. By the way, you are not supposed to sleep, but preferably be in a state that is between awake and asleep. Some may go quickly into a hypnotic state, while others need more time. Often the state will get deeper the further into the hypnosis session you get. During the session, the depth of the hypnotic state can vary.

Who can put me into a hypnotic state?

We are in a hypnotic state several times a day so it not some mystirious state, but a state where the brain ossilates slower. There is always only one person who can put you in a hypnotic state and that is yourself. However, a hypnotist can help you induce the state but it is you who decides if you allow it.

How does it feel to be in hypnosis?

It just feels like your are very relaxed. Depending on how far down we are in hypnosis, we can be almost 'completely gone' as in just before sleep, or 'quite awake'. In modern hypnosis therapy, there can be a dialogue between the client and the therapist, who typically asks questions to know what the client is experiencing, so that the therapy can work with what is happening in the client's subconscious.

What if I fall asleep during a session?

This can sometimes be hard to avoid but often it will only be for a few minutes and this will not affect the overall results. But sleeping the whole time might make the hypnotherapy less effective. Therefore, we advise you to not be very tired when you show up to a session.

Can I be hypnotised against my will?

No, hypnosis requires your consent and willingness to participate—it cannot be forced upon you.

Hypnosis works by engaging the subconscious mind through relaxation and focused attention, but for the process to be effective, you must be open to it. Your mind will always maintain a level of awareness and control, meaning that if you do not want to be hypnotized, the suggestions given during hypnosis will not take effect. This is why hypnosis cannot override your free will or force you to do something against your morals or desires.

Popular myths sometimes portray hypnosis as a form of mind control, but in reality, all hypnosis is self-hypnosis — meaning that you are the one allowing the process to happen. A hypnotist or therapist can only guide and facilitate the experience, but they cannot force you into a trance or make you do something unwillingly.

Even if you see a stage hypnosis show with people standing on one leg clucking like a chicken the participants have a desire to play along. Only a few of a show audience will be appointed for the stage as they are spotted as the ones who are most cooperative and willing.

Is the brain like a computer?

The brain analogy is seeing the brain like a computer with various programs installed in the subconscious. The programmes have been installed throughout your life since you were born, maybe even before that.Having programmes installed is in many cases convenient, so we don't have to experience the world all over again every time a new thing happens. The programs make it easier for us to get through everyday life. However, some of the installed programs are not appropriate, it may be fears or negative beliefs. For example, that you are not good enough, that you are ultra-afraid of spiders or that you absolutely need sweets.

Hypnosis therapy is like deleting old outdated and unwanted programmes and installing new ones.

What happens in a hypnosis therapy session?

Pre-talk

When you show up, I welcome you in a calm and relaxed atmosphere. We then go through the challenges that you want to adress. The reason why you do not just change even though you want to is probably because something is programmed in your subcounscious mind. It does not understand the word 'not'. Therefore, we need to formulate what you want instead of your current state and the sentences must be turned around so that they are positive. For example, you want to be 'sugar-free' instead of 'you won't crave sugar'

Induction

It is necessary that you are prepared to let go and receive suggestions – in relation to what you want to change. Therefore, you are brought into a hypnotic, i.e. relaxed state, in the first phase of hypnosis, and this phase is called the induction. Induction can be compared to meditation, where you also relax. The difference is just that with hypnotic therapy, we use the relaxed state to talk to the subconscious afterwards.

Hypnosis Therapy / Suggestions

The purpose of this part is to plant new ideas in the subconscious in order to change how you relate to different things in life that you think are inappropriate. These new ideas are called suggestions

Future pacing

At the end of the session we will adress how you will be changed after the session.

How many hypnosis therapy sessions do I need?

The number of sessions depends on your goals, your history, and your personal process. Some clients experience noticeable change after just one or two sessions, while others prefer a series of sessions to go deeper and build lasting transformation. A hypnosis therapy course is typically much shorter than traditional therapy and a hypnosis course is typically 3-5 sessions, sometimes only 1 session is needed. The first session is typically longer than the next. A session typically lasts between 1 and two hours, but can also be shorter.

What should I expect in my first session?

Your first session is designed to be a gentle introduction. We’ll begin with a conversation about what brought you here—your goals, your experiences, and any questions or concerns you may have. From there, I’ll guide you through a relaxed and comfortable hypnosis process that’s always adapted to your needs and preferences. Many clients leave feeling lighter, clearer, and pleasantly surprised at how easy and natural the experience feels.

Can hypnosis help if I’ve tried everything else?

Yes, many clients come to hypnosis after trying other forms of therapy, coaching, or personal development work. Because it works with the subconscious mind in a unique way, hypnosis often reaches places that talking alone cannot. It’s not about “fixing” you—it’s about reconnecting you with your inner wisdom and capacity for change. If you’re feeling stuck or disheartened, hypnosis could be the key that unlocks a new path forward.

Secondly, as I am (and other therapists are) paying paxes and a long list of costs of running the business, we need to charge what can seem to be a high price - in order for us to make a decent living without having to have 20 clients a day and getting burned out.
